Murkomen urges Judiciary to punish violent protest organizers

Elgeyo Marakwet — Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a sharp call to the Judiciary, urging it to take firm action against individuals responsible for recent violent protests that left public property destroyed and law enforcement targeted.

Murkomen made the statement Saturday during President William Ruto’s official development tour of Elgeyo Marakwet County. The tour included the commissioning of key water infrastructure projects and reforestation initiatives.

Addressing a public gathering, Murkomen warned that unless the courts hand out harsh sentences to protest organizers and those behind the violence, the country could spiral into chaos.

“If the Judiciary fails to act, it will put Kenya in serious danger,” he said. “We have seen demonstrations before, but what happened recently crossed the line mobs burned police stations, looted weapons, and torched court buildings. That’s not protected under Article 37 of the Constitution.”

Murkomen emphasized that the government would not hesitate to pursue legal action. “We will arrest all those who attacked civilians and destroyed public property. These are not peaceful protesters. These are criminals,” he said.

He further challenged the Chief Justice and the courts to act decisively. “We in the Executive will remain firm. But it’s the responsibility of the Judiciary to deliver justice. Those involved in organizing and funding this violence must be held accountable,” he added.

The Interior CS also issued a direct warning to politicians believed to be behind the unrest. “No leader will be shielded whether it’s an MCA, MP, Governor, or a former official. Each one will have their day in court,” he declared.

The latest wave of protests, which began in late June, has been marked by arson attacks on police infrastructure, destruction of property, and confrontations with security forces. The government has linked the violence to political instigators but has not yet named individuals publicly.

President Ruto, who was present during the address, is leading a county-wide tour that includes launching the Etio and Simotwo Water Projects and breaking ground on the Tirwane Water Project. He also presided over a tree-planting ceremony under the 9th Kaptagat Integrated Conservation Programme.

Murkomen’s remarks underscore growing pressure on the Judiciary to act in step with the Executive as the country navigates tensions between civil liberties and public order. No formal response has yet been issued by the Judiciary regarding his comments.
