MP demands urgent police probe into a string of murders in Gem

Gem – Gem Member of Parliament Elisha Odhiambo is calling for an urgent police crackdown following a disturbing pattern of murders targeting women and schoolgirls in his constituency.

Speaking in Mutumbu, Yala Sub-county, Odhiambo urged the Inspector General of Police to dispatch a special investigative team to the region. He said the rise in killings has left residents anxious and shaken.

“It is deeply worrying that more innocent girls and members of the public continue to fall victim to what appears to be either a serial killer or an organized gang,” Odhiambo said on Sunday. “Meanwhile, the police seem helpless.”

His statement follows the murder of two women last week. Veronica Odongo, a widow, and Elizabeth Achieng, a Form Two student, were both found dead in East Gem three days ago. Their deaths come just weeks after two other girls were killed in the Mindhine and Muhanda areas.

“We cannot continue this way,” said Odhiambo. “People are scared, and no one feels safe. I am appealing to everyone if you know anything that can help, say it. We must protect our people.”

The MP called for immediate deployment of the Special Crimes Prevention Unit to Sagam, Sinaga, and East Gem, naming them as the areas hardest hit by the recent violence.

Odhiambo revealed that he has already met with security heads in Siaya County and agreed to engage specialized units from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to help bring the situation under control.

“We cannot be in a constituency where people are slaughtered like chicken, not under my watch,” he declared. “The perpetrators’ days are numbered. This week, something must happen.”

He also urged locals to report any suspicious activity to authorities or share information directly with him. “If you can’t trust the police or chiefs, come to me. I will take it forward myself.”

Odhiambo criticized the national government for failing to replace officers transferred out of Gem, saying the shortage has weakened the local security response. He said the region urgently needs more boots on the ground.

He also accused local police of diverting too much energy toward illicit liquor crackdowns while ignoring serious threats to human life.

“They must concentrate on their core mandate protecting lives,” he said. “This obsession with alcohol raids has distracted them from real dangers.”

The string of killings has alarmed many across Siaya County, raising questions about the capacity of law enforcement to respond to emerging crime patterns. As families mourn and fear spreads, the MP’s demand signals growing pressure on national security agencies to act.

The DCI has not yet issued a statement on the reported cases. Police officials in Siaya have acknowledged the reports but say investigations are ongoing. No arrests have been announced.
