NAIROBI — Former Chief Justice David Maraga has launched an online campaign platform to fund his 2027 presidential run and within just 48 hours, it raised more than half a million shillings.

The website, davidmaraga.com, invites Kenyans to contribute as little as Sh50 to what Maraga calls a “people-driven” bid to “Reset, Restore, and Rebuild Kenya.”

“In just two days, we had more than Sh500,000 from Kenyans here at home,” Maraga said during an interview on Citizen TV. “Even those in the diaspora have sent in dollars. That tells you Kenyans want change.”

He stressed that his campaign would not rely on wealthy donors or political kingmakers, but on everyday citizens. Maraga pledged to personally contribute only a modest amount.

“I’ll put in very little money, around Sh1 million or Sh2 million,” he said. “I don’t have much. I will appeal to Kenyans to contribute to the campaigns.”

The platform, now live, requires donors to share their name, phone number, email, and amount contributed. Maraga promised that every cent collected would be accounted for and made public.

According to his campaign team, the funds will support grassroots mobilisation, town hall meetings, digital outreach, and building a volunteer network across the country.

“With the suffering Kenyans have gone through, I’m sure we’ll get Sh50 or Sh100 from individuals,” he said. “If we raise more than we need, whatever is left will go to a public cause.”

Maraga, who served as Chief Justice from 2016 to 2021 and famously nullified the 2017 presidential election, has long been seen as a symbol of integrity and independence in Kenya’s public life.

His decision to run comes at a time when public trust in traditional political figures is at a low. Many young voters, in particular, are pushing for clean leadership and a shift away from tribal alliances and patronage networks.

Maraga has promised that if elected, he will form a government run by professionals not allies or loyalists.

“Every public servant must earn their place and deliver results,” he said. “We will not run a government of rewards and cronies.”
