Lieutenant General David Ketter, the newly appointed Commander of the Kenya Army, has visited Kenyan troops serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) and Operation Amani Boni (OAB) in Lamu County.

The visit aimed to strengthen troop morale, assess field operations, and affirm the military’s commitment to stability both in Somalia and within Kenya’s borders.

In Somalia, Lt Gen Ketter toured KDF camps in Dhobley, Afmadhow, and Kismayo. He was accompanied by AUSSOM Sector II Commander Brigadier Edward Banda and senior officers from the Kenya Army Headquarters, including Chief of Operations Brigadier Charles Oduor.

Speaking to soldiers on the ground, Lt Gen Ketter praised their commitment during AUSSOM’s early phase, which officially launched on July 1, 2025. “You are not just protecting borders; you are upholding the values and safety of our nation,” he said. “Let us stay vigilant and committed. The challenges you face are real, and it is our responsibility as commanders to address them.”

He emphasized a leadership approach centered on the soldier’s welfare and mission readiness. “Discipline, accountability, and professionalism are non-negotiable. This is the standard that will define us,” he stated.

AUSSOM replaced the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) and is expected to run until December 2029. Its objective is to assist Somalia in dismantling terrorist groups like Al-Shabaab, stabilizing government institutions, and eventually handing over security responsibilities to Somali forces.

Brigadier Banda welcomed the Commander’s visit. “Your presence here sends a strong message of support. We are confident that your leadership will guide us toward achieving our mission,” he said.

In Lamu, Lt Gen Ketter visited the Multi-Agency Headquarters and was received by Base Commander Brigadier Lazarus Wafula and Deputy Commander Colonel Christopher Boit. He addressed troops deployed under Operation Amani Boni, a mission focused on eliminating extremist threats and securing the LAPSSET Corridor.

The Commander applauded the forces for their endurance and focus. “This operation plays a vital role in defending our nation and creating room for economic growth in the region,” he said.

Lt Gen Ketter also stressed the need for continued modernization of the Kenya Army. He highlighted plans for advanced training, upgraded tactical equipment, and improved troop welfare to enhance operational readiness.

“Our troops face evolving threats in rugged environments like the Boni Enclave. We must stay ahead through training, better gear, and adaptive strategies,” he noted.

He held closed-door briefings with senior officers and discussed coordination between KDF land units and the Kenya Navy Maritime Component at Manda Bay. The meetings underscored the importance of inter-agency cooperation in delivering effective security outcomes.

Lt Gen Ketter’s visit comes amid renewed focus on strengthening Kenya’s defense posture at home and abroad.
