NAIROBI — A new production of Kifo Kisimani, the acclaimed Swahili stage play by Prof. Kithaka wa Mberia, is set to open in Nairobi this August. The show promises a striking and emotionally charged performance that pushes the boundaries of Kenyan theatre. Hive of Theatre, also known as Hive of the Arts, will present the play at the C.U. Shah Jain Bhavan auditorium in Loresho on August 2 and 3, from 2:00 to 6:00 PM. Tickets range from Ksh 1,000 to Ksh 2,000 depending on purchase time.

The producers, Wanjiru Njoroge and Shiko Ngure, emphasized their approach is not about perfection, but connection. “We want to create work that makes people reflect, laugh, and maybe even heal. This is about presence and honesty,” they said in a statement. The story unfolds in the fictional town of Butangi, where a courageous citizen named Mwelusi stands up against a tyrannical regime led by the ruthless Mtemi Bokono. The plot explores themes of oppression, betrayal, and the personal cost of freedom. Through poetic language and symbolic scenes, the play challenges audiences to confront injustice and remember those who fight for change.

Martin Kigondu directs the production. Known for bold storytelling and strong character work, Kigondu recently won Best Director and Best Producer at the 2024 Kenya Theatre Awards. His past honors also include Best Playwright and Best Actor in a Solo Performance.

Kalasha Award-winning actor Gadwill Odhiambo leads the cast as Mwelusi. He previously worked as Assistant Director in The Trial of Dedan Kimathi earlier this year. Odhiambo’s performance is expected to bring depth and intensity to the role of a man risking everything for his people.

Ben Tekee plays the oppressive ruler Mtemi Bokono. Tekee is a familiar name on both stage and screen, recognized for his commanding presence and nuanced character portrayals.

Cosmas Kirui takes on the role of Gege, supported by Gaitan Brian as Zigu. The production also features Alison Kariuki (Nyalwe), Afrikan Nduta (Kaloo), and Sanchez Ombasa (Askari I), among others, forming a vibrant ensemble of experienced stage performers.

The play, originally celebrated for its bold stance on dictatorship and resistance, arrives at a time when questions of leadership, youth activism, and justice dominate Kenya’s national conversation. Its return to stage is not just theatrical it’s political and timely.

Tickets are available online and at the venue, with Early Bird pricing at Ksh 1,000, Advance tickets at Ksh 1,500, and Gate entry at Ksh 2,000.

Kifo Kisimani is set to deliver more than a performance it promises a powerful cultural statement that speaks directly to the moment.
