Kenya’s creative and political talent stole the spotlight in Lagos this week as four of its own were recognised at the prestigious Africa Golden Awards.

From hard-hitting rap bars to the halls of Parliament and screens across the continent, the winners are as diverse as they are influential. The awards — held annually — celebrate African excellence in leadership, music, media and film. For Kenya, 2025 was a moment of pride.

Babu Owino: From Campus Leader to African Voice

PHOTO EMBAKASI EAST MP: named Top Influential Young African Leader of the Year

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino was named Top Influential Young African Leader of the Year, applauded for his role in youth empowerment and political advocacy.

“Leadership is not about age — it’s about service,” Babu said in a brief statement shared after the win. A former student leader at the University of Nairobi, he holds a First-Class degree in Actuarial Science, an LLB, and two master’s degrees.

Organisers commended him for his commitment to social justice and ability to connect with Africa’s younger population. His recognition places him among the continent’s most promising political voices.

Khaligraph Jones: Pen, Punchlines and Purpose

Khaligraph Jones, the self-styled OG from Kayole, took home Best Lyricist of the Year. Known for his rapid-fire delivery and unfiltered lyrics, the rapper has long been a cornerstone of Kenya’s hip-hop scene.

“The pen is still mighty,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter) after the win.

His music, often grounded in everyday struggles, has earned him respect far beyond East Africa. This award is a nod not just to his flow — but to the message in his music.

Vera Sidika: Reality Royalty

Vera Sidika was crowned Top Female Reality TV Star of the Year, thanks in part to her role in The Real Housewives of Nairobi.

The award recognises her dominance in African reality TV, and her growing influence across digital platforms.

From her first appearance in P‑Unit’s “You Guy” music video to becoming a full-fledged entrepreneur and influencer, Vera’s journey has been anything but ordinary.

“This one is for every woman who’s had to turn criticism into currency,” she wrote on Instagram following the win.

Pascal Tokodi: A Leading Man on Many Fronts

Pascal Tokodi received Best Actor of the Year, credited for his stirring performance in the drama series Ba Maru. Judges praised his emotional depth and commitment to authentic storytelling.

Tokodi’s win also highlights the rising impact of Kenyan actors in Africa’s film industry. Off-screen, he continues to balance his acting career with music — known for hits like Sitaki and African Lady.

Kenya’s Cultural Moment

These wins are more than just individual honors. They reflect Kenya’s growing influence on the African cultural and political map.

From political corridors to recording booths, and from TV studios to online platforms, Kenya’s stars are no longer just local favourites — they’re continental leaders.

And as the curtain closed on the 2025 Africa Golden Awards, it was clear: the Kenyan flag flew higher than ever.
