Kenya and China have reaffirmed their long-standing commitment to deepening military and diplomatic relations. The pledge was made during a ceremony held in Nairobi marking the 98th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA). Speaking at the event hosted at the Chinese Embassy, Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Guo Haiyan emphasized Beijing’s strategic focus on Africa and its intention to expand peace and security partnerships with the continent. “China will continue to support African peace and security efforts,” said Ambassador Guo. “We are committed to building a shared future between China and Kenya based on sincerity, mutual benefit, and friendship.”

Ambassador Guo also noted that the anniversary coincided with the 80th anniversary of China’s victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the broader World Anti-Fascist War. She described the PLA as a “pillar in safeguarding global peace and stability,” and underscored the importance of China’s partnerships in regions like the Horn of Africa.

Kenya Army Commander Lieutenant General David Keter highlighted China’s consistent support for the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), particularly in areas such as counter-terrorism, humanitarian assistance, and disaster response. “Our military has gained valuable exposure through training programs, study visits, and joint courses hosted by the PLA,” said Lt. Gen. Keter. “These engagements have enhanced the professionalism and preparedness of our forces.”

Keter called the anniversary a moment to reflect on “a friendship built over decades,” crediting the collaboration for helping shape Kenya’s defense capabilities and international cooperation frameworks. Senior officials present at the celebration included Deputy Director General for Asia and Pacific Affairs Jane Makori, Major General Faustino Lobali, and Senior Colonel Zhao Peng. Their presence signaled continued high-level engagement between the two nations.

The PLA, founded on August 1, 1927, has increasingly extended its global footprint, with Beijing describing its current military diplomacy as focused on stability and development in allied regions. The Nairobi event reflects China’s intent to play a larger role in regional security discussions, especially as it positions itself as a strategic partner to African nations.

Both governments used the occasion to highlight shared values and reiterated their plans to pursue greater coordination on peace support operations and joint security initiatives.

The ceremony closed with a renewed call for multilateral cooperation in securing peace across Africa, particularly in the Horn region where geopolitical tensions continue to pose challenges.
