General Moses Ali, Uganda’s 86-year-old Second Deputy Prime Minister and long-serving MP for Adjumani West, has made it clear: he’s not stepping aside just yet.

Despite growing calls for him to retire, the veteran politician has confirmed he will be seeking re-election in the 2026 general election, marking another chapter in a career that has spanned more than five decades. His team insists he still has work to do.

“He is up to the task. The people of Adjumani still need him,” said Gabu Amacha, his political assistant and head of his campaign task force, in an interview with Daily Monitor. “This will be his final term.”

A Veteran Soldier and Statesman

Gen Ali, who was born on April 5, 1939, has worn many hats soldier, rebel leader, cabinet minister, and lawmaker. He began his military career in the late 1960s and was appointed Minister for Provincial Administration in 1973 under President Idi Amin. He later served in multiple ministries including Finance, Internal Affairs, Trade, and Disaster Preparedness.

Though he once fell out with Amin and fled into exile, he returned to Uganda in the mid-1980s, led a rebel group, then reconciled with President Yoweri Museveni. His fighters were absorbed into the national army, and he steadily climbed the military ranks, eventually being named a full General in 2012.

He has represented Adjumani in Parliament for over 20 years, only losing once in 2006.

Critics Question His Age and Health

But questions about his age and fitness persist.

Last month, Gen Ali made headlines when he was nominated for the ruling NRM primaries while seated in his car. In the days that followed, he held a thanksgiving event and even danced briefly, seemingly to demonstrate vitality.

Still, he has often skipped campaign rallies, sending aides in his place.

“It’s time for him to rest,” said Margret Joan, a resident of Adjumani. “He should leave as a respected hero. Maybe the President can appoint him to a ceremonial position.”

Others see value in his experience.

“He’s helped the people of Madi Sub-region for years,” said Abdul Amanya, another resident. “He’s still got the connections and knowledge to bring development.”

A Tough Race Ahead

Gen Ali faces stiff competition in the NRM primaries. Among his challengers is Nixon Owole, a former district chairperson with a strong grassroots following. Also in the race are Santos Adrawa and Moses Kibrai.

Supporters of Gen Ali say he plans to use his final term to push for Adjumani Town Council to gain municipality status and improve health and road infrastructure. His team has dismissed concerns about his health, citing his long service in both military and civilian roles.

“He’s served in government since 1968. He knows how things work,” Mr Amacha said. “Why stop now?”
