Five people died on Monday after a man opened fire at a food market in Bangkok, Thailand. The gunman, identified as a Thai national, later died by suicide at the scene, according to police. The attack occurred at Or Tor Kor Market in the Chatuchak district, a popular venue known for its fresh produce and seafood. Authorities confirmed that four security guards and one market worker were killed. Two other people, both vendors, were injured and taken to nearby hospitals.

Police said the suspect had a known dispute with the market’s security team. Lieutenant Siam Boonsom told reporters that the motive appeared to be personal and that there was “no indication” the shooting was linked to any political or international conflict, including the current border tensions with Cambodia.
“We are treating this as an isolated event caused by a grievance between the shooter and security personnel at the market,” Boonsom stated.
Emergency services arrived shortly after the attack. Photos from the scene showed responders surrounding the suspect’s body. He was dressed in a green camouflage hat and appeared to be wearing a uniform, although police did not confirm whether he had any military affiliation.
While gun ownership in Thailand is higher than in neighboring countries, mass shootings remain relatively rare. However, the country has seen a string of deadly incidents in recent years.
In October 2022, a former police officer killed 37 people most of them children at a daycare center in Nong Bua Lamphu Province. In 2023, a 14-year-old opened fire inside Siam Paragon, one of Bangkok’s busiest shopping malls, killing two and injuring five. In 2020, a soldier shot and killed 29 people during a rampage in Nakhon Ratchasima.
Monday’s attack adds to the growing list of public shootings that have shaken Thai society. Calls for tighter gun laws have grown louder, but legislative changes have moved slowly.
As of Tuesday morning, authorities were still reviewing CCTV footage and questioning witnesses. Police have not released the name of the suspect or any detailed history of his dispute with the guards.
“We will investigate all aspects thoroughly,” Boonsom said. “Our priority is ensuring public safety and understanding how this tragedy unfolded.”
