Turkana Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai has condemned the killing of a university student by armed bandits at a gold mining site in Kachilangiro, calling it a direct threat to peace in the region. The university student, who had returned home for the holidays, was carrying water on a motorbike to miners when he was ambushed and killed on the spot. The identity of the attackers has not yet been confirmed, but local leaders believe the violence is linked to long-running tensions along the Turkana-Pokot border.

“This was a hardworking youth trying to earn an honest living,” Governor Lomorukai said during a visit to the scene on Tuesday, July 30. “His murder was inhuman and calculated to destabilize peace efforts between our communities. It will not go unanswered.”

The Governor urged Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen to act swiftly and increase the number of National Police Reservists (NPRs) stationed in high-risk areas, stating that current deployments are inadequate.

“It’s time to scale up the NPR numbers. I propose at least 50 officers for each hotspot. That will help deter future attacks and save lives,” Lomorukai said.

He pointed to recent peace milestones, including the Nadapal and Lokiriama accords, as evidence that structured dialogue between communities can reduce conflict. However, he warned that peace alone is not enough without strong security enforcement.

Bandit activity has recently surged in the region, with attacks reported in Kainuk and Napeitom. Residents and local leaders say the government must respond forcefully to prevent further bloodshed.

Samuel Aliwo, Chair of the County Committee on Public Service and Security, said the violence had forced miners to suspend operations, cutting off livelihoods.

“We believe the attackers are testing the government’s will. If no action is taken, they will grow bolder,” Aliwo said. “We’re giving authorities seven days to act.”

Area MCAs, including Samal Etubon (Katilu), Dorcas Epusiye (Nominated), and Michael Aemun (Kaputir), echoed the Governor’s call for urgent investigations and arrests.

The Governor assured residents that his administration would continue to support peacebuilding while pushing for better security infrastructure. “We must protect life and restore confidence in the rule of law,” he said.

No arrests had been made by the time of reporting. Police are expected to release a statement on the progress of the investigation.
