LAMU — Three Kenya Defence Forces soldiers were killed and several others injured after their patrol vehicle hit an improvised explosive device in Sankuri, Lamu County on Monday afternoon.
According to a statement released by the KDF’s strategic communications team, the soldiers were conducting a routine patrol along the Sankuri–Kiunga Main Supply Route when the deadly blast occurred.
“Early this afternoon, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops on patrol… encountered an improvised explosive device (IED),” the statement read. “Immediately after the incident, multi-agency security teams launched operations in pursuit of perpetrators… and have heightened the manning of routes in and out of the area to deny the enemy freedom of movement.”
The explosion triggered a swift emergency response. The wounded soldiers were evacuated to medical facilities in Kiunga, where they received specialised treatment. Officials say they are responding well.
“Meanwhile, wounded personnel were evacuated to specialised military medical facilities in the region and are responding well to treatment,” the KDF said.
However, the military confirmed that three service members had succumbed to their injuries. Their identities were not immediately made public.
“Regrettably, three gallant soldiers succumbed to their injuries,” the statement added. “These soldiers paid the ultimate sacrifice while protecting the citizens of Kenya. The entire KDF fraternity condoles with their families.”
Security teams have since intensified their presence in the region, which borders Somalia and has in recent years been a target of attacks linked to al-Shabaab militants. While no group has yet claimed responsibility, authorities say investigations are ongoing and security patrols have been scaled up across Lamu County.
Monday’s attack is the latest in a string of incidents along the Kenyan coast that have raised questions about troop safety and the effectiveness of counter-terror operations in the region.
KDF remains one of the frontline institutions in Kenya’s fight against cross-border terrorism and internal insurgencies, especially in the country’s north and coastal areas.
Military officials have vowed to continue the mission.
“Kenya Defence Forces recognises the courage demonstrated by the personnel and appreciates the swift response by multi-agency teams operating in the area,” the statement concluded.
