Nairobi – Information, Communications and Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo has appointed four members to the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) announcing four open positions on the Media Council board. According to Gazette Notice No. 10086 issued on July 25, 2025, Joseph Maina Muiruri will serve as Chairperson of the Media Council. Susan Karago, Timothy Wanyonyi Chetambe, and Tabitha Mutemi retain their posts as board members. The appointments take effect immediately and will run for a three-year term.

Information Technology CS Kabogo declared four board positions vacant. Interested individuals have been asked to submit applications within seven days from the publication date. The notice directs that all applications will be evaluated by the Selection Panel as outlined under Section 7(2)(b) of the Media Council Act.
Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo revoked earlier appointments listed under Gazette Notices No. 658 of 2023 and No. 1570 of 2023. The move clears the way for a fresh round of selections and confirms the government’s intent to refresh part of the Media Council’s leadership.
The Media Council of Kenya plays a central role in promoting press freedom, maintaining professional standards, and handling media-related complaints. The appointments coming at a critical time of heightened public interest in media governance, especially amid ongoing national debates and calls for transparent communication. The government’s notice did not specify reasons for the revocation of the 2023 notices, but emphasized that the new appointments align with current statutory provisions.
The application process for the new board positions remains open until August 1, 2025.
