A man from Busia has been handed a life sentence after a Malaba court found him guilty of killing a boda boda rider during a robbery nearly two years ago.
Geoffrey Wafula Malunda was convicted of the brutal murder of 31-year-old Jeremiah Otwane Papa, who was attacked on the night of August 17, 2023, near Upland Estate in Malaba town.
Principal Magistrate Ocharo Momanyi of the Malaba Law Court ruled that the evidence presented in court proved beyond doubt that Malunda played a key role in the fatal assault.
“The accused not only took part in the killing, but also fled with the victim’s motorbike and phone,” said Magistrate Momanyi as he delivered the judgement on Wednesday.
Papa, a well-known boda boda operator in the area, was found severely injured and later died from his wounds. His murder sparked outrage among fellow riders and residents, who demanded justice.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) tracked Papa’s stolen phone and motorbike, leading them to Malunda. He had fled to Bungoma County in an attempt to avoid arrest.
According to court proceedings, Malunda did not act alone. Other suspects believed to have been involved in the attack are still at large.
“The operation to bring the remaining suspects to book is ongoing,” a police source close to the investigation told this reporter. Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward.
Outside the court, family members of the slain rider welcomed the sentence, calling it a step toward closure.
“This judgement gives us some peace,” said a relative who spoke on condition of anonymity. “But we hope the others will be caught too. Jeremiah didn’t deserve this.”
For now, the case shines a spotlight on growing concerns over the safety of motorcycle taxi operators in western Kenya, many of whom face rising threats while on the job.
