Arsenal have completed a deal to sign Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting Lisbon in a move set to reshape the club’s attacking front.
After weeks of behind-the-scenes negotiations, the North London club agreed to a transfer package worth €63.5 million, with an additional €10 million tied to performance-based add-ons. The 26-year-old forward has signed a five-year contract with the Gunners, according to sources close to the deal.
It’s a move that signals intent from manager Mikel Arteta, who has long been searching for a consistent, powerful striker to lead his attack. Gyökeres, who scored 43 goals and registered 15 assists in all competitions for Sporting last season, fits the bill.
“We’re thrilled to bring Viktor to Arsenal,” said a club official who spoke on condition of anonymity as the club prepares an official announcement. “He’s hungry, in peak form, and has shown he can lead the line with both physicality and technical skill.”
To ensure the move went through, Gyökeres’ agents agreed to reduce their commission demands—an uncommon but telling gesture of commitment from the player’s camp.
The striker’s arrival is expected to shake up Arsenal’s forward options. Gabriel Jesus has struggled with injuries and inconsistent form, while Eddie Nketiah has yet to convince as a long-term solution. Gyökeres, in contrast, offers a more direct and relentless approach.
Born in Stockholm, the Swedish international made his mark at Coventry City before his breakout season at Sporting. His blend of strength, speed, and a sharp eye for goal caught the attention of top European clubs, but Arsenal moved swiftly to secure his signature.
Sporting had initially held out for the full release clause, but a compromise was reached earlier this week. According to Portuguese media, club officials were satisfied with the fixed fee and performance incentives offered by Arsenal.
In Portugal, Gyökeres leaves behind a strong legacy in just one season. Sporting fans took to social media on Monday night to wish him well, while others questioned whether the club had let him go too soon.
For Arsenal, however, the timing couldn’t be better. With the Premier League season fast approaching, and a return to the Champions League on the cards, the club now boasts a proven goal-scorer ready to lead from the front.
