Nairobi —Thirty-six people have been charged with terrorism in connection to coordinated attacks on public property during the June 25 protests. The charges were filed following an investigation led by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Twenty-four suspects were accused of orchestrating a violent assault on multiple government offices in Kikuyu, including the Law Courts, the Chief’s Office, and the Kikuyu Probation Department. The attacks caused extensive property damage.

Among those charged are two individuals identified as close political associates of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua Peter Kinyanjui Wanjiru, also known as Kawanjiru, and Serah Wanjiku Thiga. In addition to terrorism, they face charges of arson and willful destruction of public property.

The court was informed that ten more suspects were arrested in Matuu, Machakos County. They are accused of attacking the local police station on the same day. Prosecutors said the group destroyed government vehicles and damaged police facilities during the assault.

All 36 appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Gideon Kiaga and denied the charges. The DPP opposed their release on bond, arguing the suspects were not residents of the areas where the offenses occurred and posed a flight risk. Prosecutors told the court the attacks were part of a well-coordinated plan to sabotage government infrastructure.

The cases come amid a national crackdown on individuals accused of inciting violence and targeting state institutions during public protests that followed the tabling of the controversial Finance Bill. Authorities say investigations are still underway, and more arrests could follow.
