USA — South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns made history on Wednesday morning after defeating Ulsan HD FC of South Korea 1-0 in their opening Group F match at the FIFA Club World Cup, becoming the first African club to win a match in this year’s tournament.

Iqraam Rayners sealed the victory in the 36th minute, finishing a well-placed pass from Lucas Libeiro inside the penalty area. The goal held through a tense second half as Sundowns maintained their lead against a persistent Ulsan side.

The win places Sundowns at the top of Group F with three points. Brazilian champions Fluminense and German club Borussia Dortmund trail with one point each after a goalless draw on Tuesday evening.

In Group E, Inter Milan were held 1-1 by Mexico’s Monterrey CF, while River Plate of Argentina posted a commanding 3-1 win over Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds.

Elsewhere, Egyptian giants Al Ahly, who have won the CAF Champions League a record 12 times, were held to a scoreless draw. Tunisian club Esperance fell 2-0 to Brazil’s Flamengo in a separate Group C match.

Later today, Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca will face Premier League title holders Manchester City in Group G. Juventus is also set to meet Al Ain from the United Arab Emirates early Thursday in Group H action.

Fifteen-time European champions Real Madrid will open their campaign today evening against Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia, followed by Pachuca CF of Mexico taking on Austria’s Red Bull Salzburg.

The Club World Cup, being held across venues in the United States, has expanded participation under FIFA’s new format, showcasing elite teams from every continent.

Mamelodi Sundowns’ win not only boosts their hopes of advancing in the competition but also marks a milestone for African clubs competing on the global stage.
