The Government of Kenya, through the Office of the Special Envoy on Technology, has made a significant move to enhance its global standing in AI governance by launching the much-needed Diplomat’s Playbook on AI. The crucial document is designed to empower scores of diplomats worldwide with the knowledge and requisite tools to thrive in the global AI policy landscape.
As noted during the glamorous unveiling, the Diplomat’s Playbook aligns with Kenya’s broader goals of global governance reforms and commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Speakers present from different government ministries, lauded this Playbook, noting that it positions Kenya as a key player in the global AI economy.
The playbook’s forewords, authored by Kenya’s top officials, highlight the nation’s dedication to shaping AI’s future. H.E. Musalia Mudavadi, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, through CS Tuya, noted “In an era where Artificial Intelligence is rapidly reshaping the global landscape, its impact on international relations, economic development, and social progress cannot be overstated.”
Dr. Margaret Nyambura Ndungu, Cabinet Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy, added “By fostering synergy between diplomatic expertise and technical knowledge, we are better positioned to advocate for AI systems that drive innovation and economic growth while upholding inclusivity, sustainability, and ethical governance.”
Ambassador Philip Thigo, Special Envoy on Technology, emphasized that, “Our message in global AI discussions is clear: AI must be guided by principles of fairness, transparency, and inclusivity, empowering the Global South and addressing structural inequalities.”
Under the leadership of President William Ruto, Kenya has been a vocal advocate for reimagining the global financial system, promoting equitable economic growth, and championing climate resilience. The Diplomat’s Playbook on AI Governance integrates these priorities, ensuring AI advancements support Kenya’s mission of creating a just and sustainable global community.
Moreover, very recently, Kenya was selected as the first and only African country to join the far-reaching launch of the International Network of AI Safety Institutes in San Francisco. This alignment is further strengthened by Kenya’s active role in international frameworks like the Global Digital Compact and its co-sponsorship of the United Nations AI Resolution.
As AI continues to reshape international relations, economic systems, and societal norms, Kenya recognizes the urgent need to shape AI governance proactively. This playbook will equip diplomats with strategies to advocate for ethical, inclusive, and sustainable AI practices on the global stage.
The Diplomats Playbook on AI Governance is a landmark initiative, underscoring Kenya’s commitment to ethical and inclusive AI development and will be disseminated to all Kenyan missions across the world.
