Olympics marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge witnessed English Premier League side Manchester United lock horns with Liverpool in what would be a night to forget for Old Trafford faithful.
The two-time world record holder received a standing ovation at the Theatre of Dreams as Liverpool, inspired by Mo Salah, easily defeated Erik ten Hag’s squad 3-0.
Kipchoge, an INEOS brand ambassador, sat next to his friend Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the new part-owner of Manchester United overseeing its football operations.
Earlier on Saturday, Kipchoge had the privilege of rubbing shoulders with Manchester United’s first team during their training session ahead of their crunch fixture against their historic Premier League rivals.
Kipchoge received a jersey from Bruno Fernandes, and there were smiles and cheers at Carrington ahead of Sunday’s defeat to the Kop, where Luis Diaz scored twice and Mo Salah added a third with two assists.
The atmosphere at the Theatre of Dreams was fraught with tension and despair as thousands of United fans experienced what can only be described as a living nightmare.
Not even Eliud Kipchoge’s winning smile could offer solace in the face of yet another thorough Liverpool defeat, something fast becoming a tradition.
