Morara Kebaso has outdone himself by influencing nationwide public audits of development projects and promoting civic education.
“Kenya is a crime scene.” So, is said in every corridor whenever corruption scandals and theft of public funds with impunity, are brought to light.
In the past few weeks, President Ruto has been traversing the country, touring regions, and launching projects, some relaunched for a second and third time, making promises like he was on the campaign trail.
Public audit reports have proven that most projects are money pits for corruption, used to line the pockets of corrupt officials and contractors. Most recently, Ruto was on a tour in the Nyanza region, dabbed ‘homecoming’, for the newly appointed Cabinet secretaries.
A region predominantly side-lined by past governments as an opposition stronghold, riddled with poverty, high disease prevalence, and poor infrastructure, was chanting praises to the president as he made promises to the residents, going as far as promising a chopper to the fishermen. Textbook behavior of sycophants.
The loyalty to our captors is quite touching.
Morara’s tour of Nyanza dabbed Two-Day Delaunch Tour, and hot on the aftermath Ruto’s tour has not only opened a can of worms but also continued to prove the long-held assumption of a Presidency residing in lies.
Interestingly, unlike political rallies characterized by huge motorcades and paid crowds, the tour was motivated by the need for civic education and debunking lies told by the political class in Ruto’s just-concluded tour.
“We want to do civic education by helping people understand how elective choices affect their life, how corruption affects the quality of their life and expose lies told to them,” Morara wrote on his X handle.
Political dissent has been marred with sponsored violence propagated against the dissenters. This has in most cases scared away well-meaning individuals, rendering public civic education a dangerous duty.
“If we take the approach of holding citizen assemblies in every constituency in social halls or any place, his corrupt cartel will organize goons to beat up the attendees and spread fear. Because there is a good chance that your MP or governor who sings praises of Ruto is also corrupt and has acquired illicit wealth through him. Therefore, the whole country can easily become unsafe for the vocalists of this movement,” Morara decried.
To solve the issue, educators have opted to use the element of surprise. “As the president does fake development tours we can do civic education tours to mirror his tour. We get citizens of goodwill to meet their means of travel. We travel as a convoy together. We go and delaunch stalled projects where money has been stolen then we do a random stopover in village market centers. In these stopovers, we don’t do it like a rally. We do it as a public engagement forum where even residents are given the mic to say what they feel.”
