Countries have urged their citizens to leave Lebanon due to the escalating conflict between the Israeli government and Hezbollah, owing to the group’s stance and support of Hamas which have seen cross-border bombings in Lebanon and Northern Israel.

Kenya has joined countries urging their citizens to leave Lebanon. A 2022 report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) noted a rise in the Kenyan community in Lebanon, with 3,233 new workers arriving in 2021. In October 2023, an additional 1,500 Kenyans moved to Lebanon for employment as part of an agreement between the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) and various agencies.

According to the Kenyan Consulate in Beirut, the majority of these job seekers are women who primarily take up domestic roles. Additionally, other skilled Kenyan workers find employment as food and dairy technologists, veterinary staff, agricultural officers, tourist consultants, computer experts, technicians, and staff in hotels and restaurants.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry through the Department of Diaspora Affairs has urged its citizens living in Lebanon to leave the country or move to safer areas.

“We are appealing to those who can move to safer areas within Lebanon and those able to leave the country to do so. For Kenyans with family members in Lebanon, kindly call +254114757002 number provided for ease of safety coordination or visit our offices at the Old Mutual Building, Ground floor along Upper Hill Road,” the Ministry stated on Tuesday.

Those seeking evacuation have been urged to register through +96590906719 or +96171175006 or +254114757002. They can also do so by filling an online form provided by the ministry.
