JKUAT Students Protest Assassination of Fellow Student Denzel Omondi

Students from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) have taken to the streets demanding answers regarding the assassination of Denzel Omondi, a fellow student. Omondi, a Quantity Survey student, went missing on June 26th following his participation in the anti-Finance Bill protests. His body was discovered a week later in a quarry in Kabete. Amnesty International has reported that Omondi’s death is suspected to be linked to his involvement in the protests.

The discovery of Omondi’s body has sparked outrage among JKUAT students, who have been vocal about the increasing incidents of insecurity and police brutality. The students accuse the local police of not doing enough to protect them and allege that the police have been complicit in the violence against protesters. These protests have brought to light broader issues of police accountability in Kenya.

Amnesty International and other human rights organizations have joined the calls for a thorough investigation into Omondi’s death and for those responsible to be held accountable. Irungu Houghton, Executive Director of Amnesty International Kenya, stated that the National Police Service has been uncooperative in facilitating investigations into cases of suspected police brutality, further exacerbating the students’ grievances.

The situation remains tense as students continue to demand justice for Omondi and other victims of police violence. The protests highlight the urgent need for reforms within the police force to ensure the safety and rights of all citizens are upheld.
