As the MoH, in liaison with the County Government of Kiambu seeks to truck the missing chemical, let’s delve into the dangers of this chemical.

What is Sodium Cyanide?

Sodium cyanide, also known by names such as Cyanobrik, Cyanide of sodium, cyanide salt, or Cyanogen, is a highly toxic inorganic compound. It is a white sodium salt that dissolves easily in water and has a high affinity for metals. This compound is particularly dangerous due to its ability to form hydrogen cyanide gas when treated with acids such as sulfuric acid.

Exposure and Risks

People can be exposed to cyanide in various ways:

  • Airborne Release: Inhalation of cyanide gas, which causes rapid onset of symptoms.
  • Water Contamination: Contact or consumption of contaminated water.
  • Food Contamination: Ingesting food or drink tainted with cyanide.
  • Direct Contact: Skin or eye contact with cyanide.

The severity of exposure depends on the form and concentration of cyanide. Cyanide gas is most dangerous in enclosed spaces, while it disperses more quickly in open areas, reducing its harmful impact.

Uses of Sodium Cyanide

The poisonous chemical is used in gold mining among other industrial uses

Sodium cyanide is widely used in several industries:

  • Gold Mining: Utilized for extracting gold and other precious metals.
  • Chemical Production: Helps produce commercially significant chemicals like cyanogen chloride and nitriles.
  • Other Industrial Uses: Employed in metal cleaning, dye production, and as an electroplating solution. It is also used in agriculture as a pesticide.

Emergency Response and Safety Measures

If exposed to cyanide, the following steps should be taken immediately:

  1. Move to Fresh Air: Leave the contaminated area and breathe fresh air.
  2. Remove Contaminants: Remove clothing, jewelry, and accessories, blot any liquid, and wash the body thoroughly with lukewarm water and mild soap.
  3. Seek Medical Attention: Cyanide poisoning requires prompt treatment with specific antidotes and supportive medical care.

Long-term Health Effects

Survivors of significant cyanide exposure may experience lasting damage to the heart, brain, and nerves. Thus, timely medical intervention is critical.

As the search for the missing sodium cyanide continues, the public is urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities or findings to the authorities immediately. The safety and health of the community depend on swift action and cooperation.
