Kenya Meteorological Department Issues Four-Day Weather Advisory Amid Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a four-day advisory warning of continued heavy rainfall, strong winds, and large ocean waves. The four-day weather advisory follows a weekend of significant rainfall across the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi.

Meteorological Services Director Dr. David Gikungu stated that the heavy rainfall observed over the weekend is expected to persist, intensifying through Monday evening in the affected regions. The regions of the Rift Valley, Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and the Coast are particularly at risk. The rain is predicted to reduce in intensity inland on May 22 but is expected to escalate along the coast from May 22 to May 24.

“The heavy rainfall will likely be accompanied by gusty winds, large waves in the Indian Ocean, and strong southerly winds in the eastern region,” Dr. Gikungu noted.

Residents in the following counties are advised to exercise caution: Kisumu, Homabay, Siaya, Migori, Busia, Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Narok, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West-Pokot, Turkana, Samburu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Nairobi, Machakos, Kajiado, Mombasa, Tana-River, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale.

The advisory emphasizes the risks of potential floods, flash floods, and poor visibility. Water levels in rivers, lakes, and dams are expected to remain high. The department strongly discourages driving through or walking in moving water, open fields, and sheltering under trees and near grilled windows to minimize the risk of lightning strikes.

“People in landslide-prone areas, especially in hilly regions, should remain vigilant. Strong winds may blow off roofs, uproot trees, and cause structural damage. Marine activities could be affected by large waves,” the advisory added.

The weather alert comes after a period of relatively fair weather following weeks of heavy downpours that caused severe flooding. The recent floods have been devastating, resulting in over 290 fatalities and 75 people reported missing, according to government figures. Additionally, over 180 individuals have been injured, and more than 55,000 households have been displaced.

Residents are urged to stay informed through official channels and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this period of severe weather conditions.
