Cabinet Approves Public Audit Amendment Bill to Fight Corruption

The Kenyan Cabinet has given its approval to the Public Audit Amendment Bill 2023, a step aimed at bolstering the independence and transparency of the Auditor General. During his address at the Kenya Revenue Authority Tax Day event, President William Ruto outlined the primary objectives of this amendment.

Firstly, the bill seeks to ensure the efficient utilization of public resources through comprehensive and transparent audits. In addition, it empowers the Auditor General’s office to conduct rigorous investigations into instances of fraud, highlighting the government’s commitment to combat corruption.

President Ruto further declared that his administration will not tolerate any form of corruption. The bill, now approved by the cabinet, enhances the Auditor General’s independence and transparency, with the goal of ensuring responsible and prudent use of the people’s resources through audits and fraud investigations.

“Our tolerance for corruption is absolute zero. In line with this, today the cabinet approved the Public Audit Amendment Bill 2023 which will enhance the auditor general’s independence and transparency to ensure proper utilization of public resources through audits and also provide power for fraud investigation,” the President said.

Acknowledging the historical challenges associated with auditing and accountability, President Ruto reiterated the government’s unwavering dedication to addressing these issues. He stressed the need to provide the Auditor General’s office with the capacity, flexibility, and autonomy necessary to hold government departments accountable for their actions.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua concurred with President Ruto’s stance, emphasizing the prudent use of funds for their intended purposes. The government is determined not to tolerate wastage, misappropriation, corruption, or irresponsible spending of taxpayers’ money.
