8 Dead in Grisly Road Accident Along Nakuru-Eldoret Highway

In the early hours of Monday, November 6, a horrific road accident between a PSV matatu and a trailer truck in the Ngata area along the Nakuru – Eldoret Highway claimed the lives of at least eight passengers.

The vehicle was travelling in the opposite direction from the matatu, which was headed towards Nakuru, according to Nakuru County Police Commander Samuel Ndanyi. It is reported that the lorry lost control and collided with Farasi Sacco’s 14-seater matatu. Reporters were informed by Mr Ndanyi that the matatu’s driver passed away instantly during the Monday morning tragedy. The truck’s driver is believed to have left the scene of the incident.

The lorry driver is reported to have driven out of his lane and collided with the approaching matatu, according to the regional police commander for the Rift Valley, Tom Odera. He said that five more individuals were rushed to the hospital in critical condition and that seven more people died there and then. Police issued a warning, fearing that the death toll from the grisly accident would increase.

According to witnesses and police, the collision happened at the Ngata stretch, and those who sustained injuries were sent to the Nakuru Level 6 Hospital. Images of the accident showed the matatu entirely destroyed, the passengers’ belongings strewn all over the road, and broken glasses everywhere. First responders were notably already at the scene.

The accident comes during a campaign to combat the risk that is still going strong. Authorities worry that more accidents like this will occur during the wet season before the end-year festivities begin.
