Elaine Ombasi, the landlady of the viral penthouse whose photos surfaced on social media and left netizens confused has finally spoken up and addressed the comments.
As several Kenyans criticized the house and others commented on its safety, it was noted that the owner had constructed a penthouse on top of rental units for herself. Despite having only one plot, Ombasi, a married mother of four, acknowledges that she has always wanted a home. She revealed that she was brought up in Zimmerman, the area that is home to the now-famous property and that she alternates between living there and in the US.
Sometimes I’m located in the US, so I normally go and come back. I wanted a house to live in and also I wanted something to make extra income and that’s how I got an idea whereby apartments would be on the bottom and then on top, I would build my house.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, the landlady says that she wanted to ‘kill two birds with one stone’ by building her house in an unconventional manner. She insists on the importance of working with the best contractors when seeking to have a good work of architecture like hers.
The mansion, which took four years to build and was finished in June of this year, contains 40 bedsitter houses that are all taken up, according to Ombasi. She claimed that after having an idea, she contacted her builder to discuss the proposal, and he gave her the assurance that it was doable and they proceeded to make it a reality.
