Diamond Platinumz Represents East Africa As Afrobeat Stars Shine At The Trace Awards

This weekend marked the inaugural Trace Music Awards in Kigali, Rwanda. The awards were part of a three-day festival that started on Friday 20th. It was an infusion of culture, arts, and music from across the globe.

Trace Awards is by Trace, a global music TV platform that recognizes and celebrates African music. The awards had 25 categories with artists nominated across 30 nations from all over the globe. The awards were held at the BK Arena which had a capacity of up to 10,000 people.

Kenya was well represented with many celebrities showing up at the awards and showcasing their fashion. Nadia Mukami and Janet Otieno were the only Kenyans nominated for the awards. Nadia was nominated for Best Female Artist while Janet was nominated for Best Gospel Artist.

Despite the fact they both did not win, Bongo flava artist Diamond Platinumz represented East Africa by taking home the Best East African Artist. He also gave a show-stopping performance with his ex-girlfriend Zuchu.

The stars at the awards were unbeatably the Afrobeat stars. Taking home most of the awards. Nigerian artists Davido and Rema each took home two awards. Davido took home awards for Best Male Artist and Best Collaboration for his song Unavailable.

Rema took home awards for the Song of the Year for his song Calm Down and Best Global Artist. This came after winning his first Grammy for the same song. Representing central Africa was Falli Ipupa who took home the Best Live Performer Award.

  3. Song of the year – Calm Down.
  4. Best music video – Baddie by Yemi Alade.
  5. Best newcomer – Roselyne Yawo.
  6. Best album – Love Damini by Burna Boy.
  7. Best collaboration – Unavailable by Davido and Musa Keys.
  8. Best Producer – Tam Sir
  9. Best live performer – Falli Ipupa.
  10. Best gospel artist – KS Bloom.
  11. Best Dancer – Robot Boi.
  12. Best global artist – Rema.
  13. Changemaker artist – Mr Eazi
  14. Best East African artist – Diamond Platinumz.
  15. Best artist Nort Africa – Dystinct.
  16. Best artist Indian Ocean – Goulam.
  17. Best artist Brazil – Ludmilla
  18. Best artist in the Caribbean – Rutshelle Guillaume
  19. Best artist UK – Central Cee
  20. Best artist Africa (Anglophone) – Asake.
