Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Lumps are not the Only Sign to Look out for in Breast Cancer

Many of the public only recognize a lump as a potential sign of breast cancer. However, a recent survey conducted by The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center reveals a knowledge gap when it comes to identifying other essential indicators.

Out of over 1,000 respondents, 93% acknowledged a lump as a breast cancer sign. However, less than half of them could identify other crucial signs that should prompt immediate attention. These overlooked signs include;

  • A retracted, inverted, or downward-pointing nipple
  • Breast puckering that appears when arms are raised
  • Loss of feeling in part of the breast
  • Thickening of the skin
  • Nipple discharge

A mere 31% recognized an inverted nipple as a potential breast cancer sign.

Dr. Ashley Pariser, a breast medical oncologist and director of breast cancer survivorship services at OSUCCC–James, expressed concern over the lack of knowledge. She noted that most breast cancers are not palpable as lumps and stressed the importance of feeling empowered about one’s body and recognizing what is normal.

Nonetheless, breast cancer remains a prevalent concern. According to the American Cancer Society, there are just under 300,000 new cases and 43,000 predicted deaths in 2023. Early detection is important for successful treatment and recovery.

Dr. Otis Brawley, Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Oncology and Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University, emphasized the significance of early detection. He stated that the only breast cancers that are potentially curable are those detected early. Screening mammograms are crucial for identifying breast cancers at their earliest and most treatable stages.

However, early detection isn’t solely dependent on medical screenings; it starts with understanding one’s own body and recognizing signs of concern. Education is key in empowering individuals. Most especially women, uninsured individuals, and those with limited resources. They should be enlightened on seeking medical attention and advocate for thorough investigations.

When addressing breast cancer awareness, it is important to highlight that this disease isn’t exclusive to women. While less common, approximately 1% of breast cancers occur in men. Hence, the need for men to be empowered to seek medical attention for concerning symptoms, especially those with a family history of breast cancer.

Understanding and recognizing various signs of breast cancer beyond a lump is crucial for early detection and saving lives. Education, empowerment, and proactive healthcare are vital elements in the fight against breast cancer and promoting better outcomes for affected individuals.
