Cabinet Secretary in charge of Foreign Affairs, Alfred Mutua, decided to send police officers to Haiti. There has been an insurgence of gang warfare that has overwhelmed the country and its police department. Last year, the country appealed for help from international countries due to the spiralling violence.

The gangs in the region have managed to control more than three-quarters of the capital. After the appeal, Mutua mentioned that Kenya would send approximately 1,000 officers to Haiti. These officers would train the police officers in Haiti and equally help in the fight against the gangs in the region.

In a statement by the CS, he mentioned that he believes that the department is skilled enough to deal with the gangs in the region. In addition to that, he mentioned that they would rescue the men and women being held hostage.

In the Twitter post, Cherargei references the success of the Kenyan police to the way they handled the protests in Kenya. He equates the protesters in Kenya to the gangs in the region of Haiti.

Police During Kenya’s Protests

Protests in Kenya had taken a drastic turn after the protesters started vandalising buildings and destroying property. In response to this, the police officers were warranted to treat the protesters as goons due to the cases of vandalism.

Consequently, they used live rounds to disperse the protests and in the process hurt people part of the protests and those not part of it. These cases drew the attention of the International institutions. Most of these institutions disagreed with the use of live rounds by the police to disperse protests since that would easily affect people not part of the protests.

The cases caused a lot of controversy in the region with the Azimio threatening to take the police department to ICC in claims of police brutality.

According to the Senator, international attention was drawn to the protests due to the police department’s efficiency unlike what Azimio mentioned. Despite the international attention being due to claims of police brutality, the senator is confident that the way the police department handled the protests was efficient and effective.

Citizens however questioned the capability of the police officers to end the war in Haiti when Kenya was grappling with Al-Shabaab threats. These questions have been dissuaded after Alfred Mutua assured Kenyans and also the US President, Joe Biden’s acknowledgement of the efforts input.
