Senegal Suspends Tiktok For Threatening National Stability

Amid opposition protests in Senegal, the Communications, Telecommunications and Digital Economy minister, Moussa Bocar, suspended TikTok in the country until further notice. This comes after the restriction of mobile internet and internet services since Monday.

Tiktok application is the social network favored by people with bad intentions to spread hateful and subversive messages, threatening the stability of the country.

The restrictions come after the opposition leader, Ousmane Sonko was charged with criminal conspiracy and plotting insurrection. In 2021, Ousmane was accused of rape and detained. Since then, Senegal has had numerous violent protests.

The seemingly liked politicians may however not be able to vie for the presidency next year since he was found guilty of morally corrupting a child and planning an uprising.

Sonko was detained on Monday with charges of provoked protests and insurrection. His arrest caused an uproar that led to the killing of three people in South Dakar on Monday and two more on Tuesday. Both incidences were linked to his arrest.

Amnesty International denounced the restrictions of the internet as ‘an attack on freedom of information’ and called on the authorities to restore the internet.

Sonko came in third when he run for presidency back in 2019 and has declared interest to run in 2024. At the moment, he risks five to twenty years in prison with his current allegations. On June 1, he was sentenced to two years in prison for another case. This led to unrest within the country which led to the death of 16 people.
