The Pharmaceuticals regulation board has stopped all sales and use of Yoni Pearls also known as vaginal detox products.
The Pharmacy and Poisons Board issued a statement on Monday stating that the products being sold are neither licensed nor registered for use in the country. Among the vaginal detox products not registered are herbal tampons, vaginal pearls or cleansing pearls.
“The PPB notifies the public that Yoni pearls are neither registered nor authorised for use in Kenya as required under the Pharmacy and Poisons Act Cap 244. Their usage poses potential health risks as the PPB cannot guarantee their safety and efficacy,” PPB CEO, Fred Siyoi said.
In addition to the statement, the board issued a warning against the distribution, supply, sale, or use of the products mentioned or those with similar attributes.
Yoni pearls have recently become popular after the promoters claimed that the pearls could resolve reproductive health issues. These issues include yeast and bacterial vaginosis infections, infertility and even polycystic ovary syndrome. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is whereby the ovary produces an abnormal amount of androgens (male sex hormones)which ought to be very minimal in women.
The products are mainly being bought from online platforms ranging from Ksh 600 to Ksh 1,000 for a set of three.

The Pharmacy and Poisons Board
The Pharmacy and Poisons Board is a Drug Regulatory Authority that was established under the Pharmacy and Poisons Act, Chapter 244 of the Laws of Kenya. This board is in charge of regulating the practice of pharmacy and the development and trade of drugs and poisons.
The board has a mandate to implement regulatory measures and achieve safety, efficacy and quality for all drugs, technologies and even chemical substances. These include locally manufactured goods, imported ones, and distributed and sold products.
Furthermore, the board asked the healthcare providers to report any health products and technologies that are suspicious and could cause harmful effects to the users. They provided the USSD code *271# for reporting any products if one cannot use the website, https://pv.pharmacyboardkenya.org/.
The intervention comes after health providers recorded an influx of women visiting the hospital after abnormal amounts of discharge were seen post the use of yoni pearls.
