LSK Demands Police Accountability on Deaths and Arrests During Protests

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has taken decisive action in seeking accountability from the police regarding the recent Azimio demonstrations.

The LSK’s commitment to defending citizens’ rights and holding authorities accountable for their actions sends a strong message about the importance of upholding the rule of law and protecting the democratic principles as spelt out in Kenya’s constitution.

According to a report by Citizen Digital, the formal letter addressed to the police by LSK has demanded information on the number of individuals arrested and detained during the protests. The body is also requesting access to relevant documents concerning postmortem examinations and the causes of death of those who lost their lives during the demonstrations.

Moreover, the LSK is determined to shed light on the names of all individuals who have been killed since the beginning of the anti-government protests.

LSK’s letter emphasized the society’s commitment to upholding transparency and safeguarding citizens’ rights. It Cites constitutional provisions, specifically Article 35, and the Access to Information Act sections 4 and 5.

The Law Society of Kenya has set a strict timeline for the police to respond. The police has been urged to furnish the requested information within seven days.

Failure to comply with this request could potentially lead to legal actions being taken against the police for violations of rights and the alleged use of unreasonable force on demonstrators. The recent anti-government protests have witnessed incidents of unlawful arrests, which have raised concerns about the protection of citizens’ rights and freedoms.

Reports have emerged of individuals being detained without proper cause or due process Thus adding to LSK’s urgent call for accountability and transparency.
