Trial of Fire: New Zealand’s Volcanic Eruption

Witnesses relived the fire and nightmare of New Zealand’s volcanic eruption on Whakaari. The island, which is also known as also known as White Island, erupted in 2019.

Whakaari island is a New Zealand volcanic island that erupted on 9 December 2019 claiming 22 lives. Out of the 47 that were reported to be on the island by the time of eruption, only 25 survived.

A trial into the disaster, brought forth by WorkSafe, has ignited a quest for justice against six parties. One of them being the island’s owners, three adventurous brothers. The once-thriving tourist destination, located 48 kilometers off the north island, became a fiery inferno that claimed 22 lives and left countless others inured.

Annie Lu, a survivor, testified via video link from Australia. She shared the shocking lack of warning given to her and her mother. Annie’s mother had booked a tour after reading a colorful brochure. The brochure had no mention of danger. Hence the tourists’ shock on discovering that there was a volcano simmering at a distressing “level two.”

The tourists felt ill prepared to brace the catastrophe, as they were only equipped with helmets and gas masks. Annie vividly described the hot mess she endured, as burning sand, ash, and rocks bombarded her body mercilessly.

The pain was indescribable, akin to red-hot needles piercing her flesh. It was as if an oven door swung open, releasing a scorching blast, magnified a thousand fold.

Lu recalled the mayhem that followed the eruption. Amidst the chaos, there were no clear instructions or plan of action. As if by instinct, the survivors bolted towards the safety of the jetty. Annie narrated diving into the water in an attempt to seek refuge for her melting legs. She added that medical attention aboard the boat was inadequate, and the scarce water supplies were quickly depleted by those desperately trying to cleanse their ash-coated skin.

According to Annie Lu, the aftermath of the disaster was not only physical but also psychological. Lu sadly said that her life was forever altered. The fashion industry, which thrived on appearances, became an impossible career path for her. The eruption had robbed her of that identity, forcing her to embark on a new journey, one she had never anticipated.

Newly wed Matthew and Lauren Urey, American citizens, recounted their terrifying honeymoon experience. They told the courtroom that, the sea voyage to the island was treacherous. There were relentless waves that left many passengers seasick. Despite being informed about the elevated activity level of the volcano, they were only provided respirators for their “comfort.” The lack of specific information left them unprepared for the tragedy that awaited.
