A 68-year-old female passenger took control of and crash-landed a flight at Martha’s Vineyard Airport in Massachusetts after the pilot passed out.

Authorities say the 79-year-old pilot of a small plane suffered an unknown medical emergency which prompted the passenger to step in and help land the plane safely. The passenger sprang into action, stabilizing the 2006 Piper Meridian, and made a soft landing on a nearby field close to the airport’s runway.

The Massachusetts State Police reported that the crash landing caused the aircraft’s left wing to break in half. CNN reported that the woman was reported to have sustained minor injuries from the incident while the elderly pilot was rushed to a hospital in Boston in life-threatening condition.

State police reported that the crash site was cleaned up after the aircraft was removed and relocated to a safe area at the airport.
