Barbie Ranks a $155 Million, Securing the Largest Opening Weekend

Not to be outdone, Oppenheimer made an impressive $80.5 million domestically. Thus exceeding initial predictions by double, according to Comscore. The combined total of “Barbenheimer” reached a jaw-dropping $302 million in North America on Sunday. With analysts anticipating even more growth when final numbers are reported on Monday.

What’s truly unprecedented is how these two films have propelled each other’s success. Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at Comscore, remarked that he couldn’t recall any parallels to this phenomenon. Both movies bolstered each other. Barbie benefitted from its female-driven storyline while Oppenheimer drew audiences with its epic historical drama.

Barbie has rewritten the record books, becoming the highest grossing domestic start for a female-directed movie. The film’s closest comparison, Wonder Woman, 2017, only managed to rake in around $38 million. It was directed by Patty Jenkins. Meanwhile, the collaboration between Mattel’s iconic doll and Warner Bros. has proven to be a winning formula.

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has not been left behind either. Surpassing the success of many of his previous hits. With $33 million earned on its opening day, the film has outperformed Inception and Dunkirk. Becoming another feather in the director’s cap.
