Awkward Moments Experienced by Visitors and Hosts

All over the world, visitors are seen as a form of blessing and are always welcomed especially if the host can afford to host them or if the visitor made prior arrangements beforehand to visit and informed the host they would be visiting.

Usually, there are some behaviors that most visitors do and that most hosts do as well that you have probably done before or seen your family do.

Sit at the edge.

Most first time visitors like to sit at the edge of the seat. For some reason, they do not want the host to think they have made themselves comfortable and at home. Others assume that it would be disrespectful especially for a first time visitor. So they opt to seat at the edge of the sofa with legs tucked tight together. Most people do not even notice they do this.

Look surprised when served.

This is a classic especially in African homes. All along the visitor has been smelling the delicious aroma coming from the kitchen or in other instances has been told by the host not to leave before having a bite that would be coming shortly. Finally, when the visitor is served and the food is set on the table and suddenly they act surprised or act as if they had somewhere to go that they might get delayed if they stay and eat.

Fine China.

Most African mothers if not all have a set of utensils that are only used by guests and of caught being used by a household member then get ready to rumble. Usually this set of dishes is stored away and only comes out when visitors mothers hold in high regards visits. Regular visitors like her children’s friend use the daily utensils the family uses every day.

In this case, mentioning how difficult it is to go serve yourself food when the visitors are still there and your hungry is a battle of its own.

Thorough cleaning.

Mothers always insist on cleaning of every corner of the house including the bedrooms as of the visitor would do an inspection before settling in. This is not something to argue about and it would be best to do as instructed or face being given a piece of your mother’s mind or whooping. This is when even the house help is dressed in uniform to keep up the appearance.

Guests and hosts are always expected to be in their best behavior always and sometimes it does not always go as thought with either.
