When long-distance marathon runner Eliud Kipchoge, broke the world record in Berlin with a time of 2:01:09, the victory was not just celebrated in Kenya but the whole world.
In addition, Kipchoge also got a lot of opportunities both internationally and locally. One of them was becoming the brand ambassador of ISUZU D-MAX which came with its perks. It was really a great way of motivating young athletes, especially those who look up to him.
Kenya has been known to have some of the best athletes in the world and yet their recognition in the streets of Nairobi is below expectations.
Collins Injera, a former rugby champion in an exclusive interview said: ‘’ It is not about the money but the recognition. In Kenya, there are so many ways we can do it. Even name a street, write a bench on a highway or even make a monument. Whatever it is, is a way of appreciating athletes. This gives athletes motivation to work hard.”
Kenyans should also encourage the culture of celebrating their people especially those representing them in international events, whether they have won or not as they endure many difficulties in training, and in some cases, risk sustaining career-ending injuries as they push their minds and bodies to the limit.
