Switch Media recently concluded a two-day photography training workshop aimed at equipping professionals with essential photography skills and unlocking the commercial potential of the art form.
The workshop, held on Monday, June 19 and June 20, witnessed enthusiastic participation from individuals representing various sectors. The event proved to be a resounding success, leaving attendees inspired and equipped with valuable knowledge.
The workshop, facilitated by Samuel Mungai, a highly experienced Kenyan communication professional with over 20 years in the industry, was designed to provide participants with comprehensive training and hands-on experience in photography.
The attendees consisted of individuals from the IEBC communications department, the National Research Fund (NRF) communications department, and youths from Gatundu South Constituency sponsored by Hon Gabriel Gathuka.
Over the course of the two-day workshop, participants were introduced to the fundamentals of photography, including theory, practical demonstrations, and exposure to different photography genres. They learned the art of proper camera handling, posture, and the care and maintenance of camera equipment and accessories. The exposure triangle, covering aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, was thoroughly explored to help participants capture clear and visually appealing photos.
In addition, the workshop delved into indoor and outdoor photography, providing examples and optimal camera settings for different shooting environments.
The second day of the workshop focused on advanced techniques, such as understanding camera and lighting accessories and their role in capturing various scenes and lighting conditions. Participants gained valuable insights into monetizing their photography skills, learning how to charge for their services, establishing their brand, and standing out in a competitive market.
They were also trained in capturing professional-quality photos using smartphones, enabling them to adapt to emerging technologies and maximize their creative potential.
The workshop concluded with a session on post-production, introducing participants to industry-standard tools such as Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. Ethical considerations in photography were emphasised, ensuring that trainees understood the importance of integrity and respect in their work. A review of the photos taken during the workshop allowed for constructive feedback and provided an opportunity for further growth.
The feedback received from both the trainer and the trainees has been overwhelmingly positive.

Samuel Mungai expressed his enthusiasm for the inspiring training experience and encouraged continued learning and the integration of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, into photography practices.
Now we have artificial intelligence which we must incorporate in all our lines of operations and in our professional spaces. We had groups from the government, corporate sector, and academia and they have been empowered. These skills are very important to help you grow in your career and also broaden your space and your influence.

I’ve learned a lot, especially how to use the mode dial, post-production, and many different things that I didn’t know. And I’m sure from now on in our events we’ll be able to get better pictures and quality content for our social media platforms and our website. I hope to attend more of these workshops. It was very awesome and I had so much fun and also learned a lot.”
