Is the Kenyan University Selection System Fair? Both the KCPE and KCSE candidates coming from the marginalized areas suffer each and every year for not having same quality education as other candidates.
This especially those from Baringo county and the north western parts of the country, who are always migrating due to continuous wars and raiding of livestock. The continuous migration may lead some of these candidates to depression and anxiety.
These places including some parts of Narok and North Eastern areas also still practice the women’s fatal sentence Female Genital Mutilation ‘ FGM’
This act causes some girls to not finish their studies, as they are married off while others feel disgraced such that they decide drop out of school.
In addition, poverty in the marginalized areas is also a factor of suffering, as some of these candidates come from homes where they hardly have enough to eat. However, they are still expected to do the same exam with other students who have all their basic needs in plenty.

This just shows how the world is not fair. Especially with the increase of food prices, it is much harder for those struggling to make their ends meet. As they will be forced to make their children do manual jobs so as to support the family.
However, the ministry of education may try to make the national exams favourable for some of these candidates especially those in the marginalized areas.
This maybe through giving those from the marginalized areas different and a little bit simple exams to those from the towns. This would increase the number of those from the marginalized areas to enter into the higher learning institutions and also reduce the rate of stealing of exams.
Thanks to the government, which has increased the number of universities, colleges and tertiary institutions in the rural areas like Garrisa university in Garrisa county, Maasai mara university in Narok county and Southern Eastern Kenya University ‘SEKU’ in Machakos county.

This is a good strategy, as it encourages students living in those areas that it is still possible. Especially those who cannot afford to go to towns like Nairobi due to expensive transport and day to day living, can still apply in their home areas institutions and still achieve their dreams.
