A mother who took a DNA test “for fun” has recently discovered that she has been raising another couple’s son for the past 12 years.
What started as an innocent curiosity has now left the unsuspecting family in a state of bewilderment and uncertainty.
The incident unfolded when Donna Johnson, 47, and her husband Vanner, 47 decided to delve into her ancestral roots by taking a popular at-home DNA test.
Little did she know that this casual undertaking would unearth a life-altering truth that would shake the very foundations of her family.
But when they got the results back, Donna was shocked. “Reading the DNA tests results online, I figured there had been a mistake,” she wrote in The US Sun.
Donna, in an attempt to make sense of the DNA test results, had a sudden and unsettling realization. Despite Vanner being confirmed as the biological father of their eldest son, the results indicated that the father of their youngest child was listed as unknown.
It was at that moment that Donna’s mind grasped the disturbing truth: there had likely been a mix-up at the IVF clinic where they had undergone fertility treatment.
Although there were noticeable distinctions in appearance between the two boys, Donna didn’t dwell on it, attributing the dissimilarities to the common phenomenon of siblings looking different from each other.

Vanner Jr inherited his father’s fair hair and striking blue eyes, while Tim took after Donna with his dark hair and a more athletic build.
As the initial denial subsided, fear began to grip Donna and her family, as they contemplated the identity of Tim’s biological father and the potential threat of him being taken away from them.
However, a lawyer provided much-needed reassurance, assuring the couple that they would remain Tim’s legal parents.
Despite the legal reassurance, Donna found it challenging to witness Vanner processing the reality that Tim was not his biological child.
Although Vanner continued to interact with Tim in the same loving manner, Donna could discern a sense of shock and inner turmoil within him.
In June 2021, the two families finally met face-to-face, an experience that Donna described as surreal. The embrace between Donna and Devin, the stranger with whom she unknowingly shared the journey of bringing a child into the world, carried a profound weight.
As their respective children, Vanner Jr and Tim, started playing with Devin and Kelly’s kids, Talon, Paxton, and Londyn, Donna’s anxieties began to subside, replaced by a growing sense of comfort and acceptance.
Before bidding farewell, Vanner posed a heartfelt question to Tim, asking if he would like a photo with Devin.

In 2022, the families reached a settlement with the clinic, opting to resolve their legal matters outside of the court system, marking a significant step forward in their shared journey towards healing and understanding.
