Just four days after his side played 120 minutes plus penalties to beat Brighton in the FA Cup semi-final, United led 2-0 at Spurs thanks to Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford’s first-half goals.

Pedro Porro launched the fightback before Bruno Fernandes hit the bar for United when he should have scored.

Erik ten Hag said:

“You have to take that. You can’t use it as an excuse. The time is enough time to recover, so our players are in demand to be ready. Today they were not ready.”We thought 90 per cent is enough, that’s why we gave balls away. And when you don’t do your job in positioning, you concede goals.

Astonishingly, Son equalised from close range after good work by Harry Kane to leave home fans, who had earlier called for Chairman Daniel Levy to go, celebrating.

Ryan Mason, who took charge of his first game as Spurs interim head coach following the sacking of Cristian Stellini, praised his players’ character in coming back from two goals down in the wake of their 6-1 thrashing by Newcastle at St James’ Park on Super Sunday.

“Big character, big personality, stuck together, kept believing, acted as a team throughout the whole game,” he said in his press conference.

The point lifts Spurs above Liverpool and Aston Villa into fifth place, while United now trail third-placed Newcastle by two points after the Magpies won 4-1 at Everton.
