Mama Ngina waterfront, a park that cost Ksh 460 million for its renovation has now become a harbor for locals to indulge in trading sexual favors.

The Mama Ngina waterfront, the largest public park in Mombasa County that was renovated in 2019 has slowly become a sex market, where locals come to engage in illegal sexual activities.

The manager of the auspicious establishment, Ali Noor, accused residents of turning the recreational establishment into a ‘market’ for sexual favors.

“People come with their cars and park them at the park for sexcapades. This is the norm and it is difficult for us to deal with the issue. This place is frequented by many people, especially during weekends,” Ali Noor, manager of Mama Ngina waterfront said. (Source: Nation. Africa)

It was also reported that they noticed the rise of this uncouth behavior after several tourists had visited the recreational facility. Some men were arrested for engaging in public sexual malpractices while others resulted in paying off the police due to the shame associated with being caught engaging in extramarital affairs.

“We have nabbed many people in the act. Some people come here with ill intentions including criminals who come here to cause harm to revelers. It is hard for the police manning this facility to know good and bad people. But dirty things happen here including those who use their vehicles as brothels,” Ali further said.

Ali has called on the government through the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Tourism and Wildlife to intervene in the situation, by deploying tourist police to ensure security and glory is restored to the establishment.

The tourism committee, led by their chairperson Kareke Mbiuki, MP for Maara constituency, went on a five-day inspection exercise in the facility to determine the gravity of the situation. Kareke, during the exercise however cautioned the respective police to not breach the visitors’ privacy.

Mama Ngina waterfront park was reopened by former President Uhuru Kenyatta during the Mashujaa celebrations in 2019, after a renovation amounting to Ksh 460 million. The project was designed to promote a thriving 24-hour economy in Mombasa, and the coastal region aside from offering a taste of Swahili culture to local and international tourists.
