This is one of the Super Sundays termed as ‘Sucking Sunday’ following Leicester, who sacked Brendan Rodgers on Sunday, and Chelsea cutting ties with Graham Potter.

Saturday’s 2-0 home loss to Aston Villa was Potter’s 11th defeat after 31 matches, Chelsea is now in 11th place in the Premier League, 12 points off the top four and a Champions League quarter-final, where they will face Real Madrid.

However, Coach Bruno Saltor will stand in for Tuesday night’s game against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.

Coach Bruno Saltor

Potter is the second manager to be sucked under the reign of owner Todd Boehly with Tomas Tuchel coming first and now the new boss of Bayern Munich replacing the number one target for Chelsea Julian Nagelsmann.

Keep in mind that Boehly spent KSH. 97.9 billion transfer spree since his summer takeover and this is a clear indication that any poor results won’t be allowed around Stanford Bridge.

Even the statement announcing Potter’s departure read: “Graham has agreed to collaborate with the club to facilitate a smooth transition.”

Let’s take a look at managers termed as favorites for Chelsea’s jobs and what would they offer.

Julian Nagelsmann

Nagelsmann is known for managing: Hoffenheim (2016-19), RB Leipzig (2019-21), and Bayern Munich (2021-23) and managed 243 matches and has been lucky to have lifted trophies: 1 x Bundesliga.

Guillem Balague (European football journalist) believes Julian Nagelsmann could be the best candidate for Stamford Bridge job and before the news of Potter’s exit, he said on BBC Radio 5 Live:

“Julian Nagelsmann has a great relationship with the owner of Chelsea [Todd Boehly]. “Chelsea is looking for a name, a personality, someone big enough to deal with what Chelsea has. If they decide to get rid of Graham Potter… I put Nagelsmann at the top of that list.”

Nagelsmann, 35, finds himself out of contract for the first time in his seven-year managerial career after his recent sacking at Bayern.

The German received offer from Real Madrid in 2018 and is likely expected to be a prime candidate for Tottenham but Balague thinks the Blues are a more likely destination.

Zinedine Zidane

Zinedine Zidane is known for managing: Real Madrid (2016-18, 2019-21) and managed 183 matches winning 3 x Champions League, and 2 x La Liga.

Zidane, 50 years, in just five years in charge of Real Madrid, across two spells, the France legend won three Champions Leagues and two Spanish titles.

Guillem Balague (European football journalist) said:

“Zidane is not in a rush. He needs to find the right place to do his thing.”That will either be Real Madrid again, the national side of France, Juventus if they call, but if no-one calls that’s not a problem.”

Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino is known for managing: Espanyol (2009-12), Southampton (2013-14), Tottenham (2014-19), and PSG (2021-22) and managed 461games-has been lucky to have lifted trophies: 1 x Ligue 1, 1 x Coupe de France.

Thumbs up to Pochettino, 51years, for a job well done at Espanyol, Southampton, and Tottenham – whom he led to the Champions League final and lost to Liverpool collecting at PSG.

Guillem Balague (European football journalist) said:

“There’s a gap at Spurs, maybe he is on the shortlist. But I know there’s been a call, not from [Spurs chairman] Daniel Levy, but indirectly to Pochettino to see if he would be happy to take the job and I think the answer is yes. “Let’s see if that’s enough to convince Daniel Levy that Poch should return.” Since Potter’s exit, Pochettino has become one of the favourites for the Chelsea job.

Antonio Conte

Antonio Conte is known for managing: Arezzo (2006, 2007), Bari (2007-09), Atalanta (2009-10), Siena (2010-11), Juventus (2011-14), Italy (2014-16), Chelsea (2016-18), Inter Milan (2019-21), Tottenham (2021-23) and has ever since managed 335 games winning 4 x Serie A, 1 x Premier League, 1 x FA Cup – good stats.

His previous three managerial jobs over a decade – Juventus, Chelsea and Inter Milan – all ended with league titles.

Conte might be in the market for a new job but is unlikely to fill the Chelsea vacancy, having previously managed the club between 2016 and 2018.

Conte’s spell as Tottenham boss ended after he called his players “selfish” and criticized the club’s culture. However, the 53-year-old probably needs a break, having recently recovered from gallbladder surgery.

Luis Enrique

Luis Enrique is known for managing: Roma (2011-12), Celta Vigo (2013-14), Barcelona (2014-17), Spain (2018-19, 2019-22) and managed 190 games winning 1 x Champions League, 2 x La Liga, 3 x Copa del Rey.

Luis Enrique, 52 years, won a treble and double in his three seasons as Barcelona manager. However, he left his role as Spain boss after their World Cup exit to Morocco.

Guillem Balague (European football journalist) said:

“He says he only reads English media,” said Balague. “He does want to move to the Premier League next but there’s a problem.”There are not many jobs he would take because he only wants to go to a team that can win things or does interesting things and that does not leave a very big list.”
