Scotland made the perfect start against Spain, scoring in less than 10 minutes played. Pedro Porro’s slip led to a hard-hit low pass by Andy Robertson which met McTominay. The Manchester United midfielder thumped it into the net past Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Despite having 25% possession in the fixture, Scotland made the most of the chances that came their way. As the first half progressed Spain got a foothold in the fixture but could not convert. Ryan Christie’s meandering run and toe poke missed the target before Joselu came close with a header for Spain that smacked the crossbar.
Right before halftime, Lyndon Dykes found himself one-on-one with Spain keeper Kepa but his effort sailed over the bar. Scotland were not willing to let their lead slip and extended it in just 6 minutes after the break.
Kieran Tierney with a blistering run down the flanks, driving in a hard-hit pass that Spain failed to deal with. The ball bounced kindly for McTominay and he placed it low into the net. 2-0 Scotland!
Steve Clark’s side had a few more chances as Lawrence Shankland shot straight at Kepa after some fine work by Callum McGregor.
With the win over Spain, Scotland top Group A with 6 points. Head Coach Steve Clarke will likely be aware that his team will be competing with Norway for second place in Group A. After Tuesday’s victory, Scotland now leads the group by a margin of five points over Norway and three points over Spain.
