Announced as the new France captain, Kylian Mbappe has led from the front in their Euro 2024 Group B Qualifying fixture against the Netherlands.
Les Bleus got off to the perfect start in front of their home fans as Mbappe scored twice in a 4-0 humbling of the Netherlands. The PSG forward was named France captain after Hugo Lloris retired from football in January.
The fixture against the Netherlands was the first since France lost the World Cup final to Argentina. Griezmann opened the scoring inside 2 minutes in a fiery start, with Mbappe providing the assist.

In the opening 21 minutes France had completely dominated the fixture with Didier Deschamps’ side scoring through Griemann (2), Upamecano (8) and Mbappe (21). The Netherlands were in such trouble that Ronald Koeman was forced to make a substitution in the first half, switching out debutant Kenneth Taylor for Manchester United loan striker Wout Weghorst. At least the new formation provided the Dutch with more defensive stability.
The French are already shaping up as title contenders for the Euro 2024 tournament thanks to the pace of Coman, the accuracy of Griezmann, and the brilliance of Mbappe. Giroud’s replacement Kolo Muani was also part of a magnificent offensive force that appeared unstoppable.
Mbappe scored the fourth goal in the 88th minute to secure their first win after the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
A penalty by Memphis Depay for a handball by Upamecano, deep in injury time, was saved by France keeper Mike Maignan, to secure the clean sheet.
