Harambee Stars will be back in action on the international scene when they face Iran in an away friendly; players elated to be called up ahead of departure
Since elimination from the World Cup Qualifiers in November 2021, Harambee Stars have not featured in international football following a ban by FIFA. The World football governing body lifted Kenya’s suspension following the reinstation of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF).
AFC Leopards keeper Levis Opiyo, Nzoia Sugar duo of Hassan Beja and Joseph Mwangi, and KCB center back Maurice Ojwang’ were sent home from a group of 30 players including foreign-based players.
Head Coach Engin Firat has pointed out a need to learn as he weighs the best squad over the next friendlies starting with the away fixture against Iran.
Kenneth Muguna, who plays for Azam FC in Tanzania noted, “It was tough (when Stars were barred from international matches due to Fifa suspension) because representing the national team and making it to the highest level is a great privilege.”
Everyone was anticipating the game, according to Philadelphia Union midfielder Richard Odada in Major League Soccer.
Harambee Stars face Iran on 28th March at the Azadi Stadium in Iran.
