Andrew Amonde has urged Shujaa to show bravery in the next rounds to increase chances of survival in the World Rugby Sevens Series
The Hong Kong Sevens begins this Friday and Shujaa will be fighting to avoid relegation. A tough group D test awaits them comprising New Zealand, Ireland, and South Africa. With only four rounds remaining in the season, Kenya has 29 points, one behind Spain in the 12th position.
Shujaa’s first group match is against New Zealand on Friday at 9:40 am; their second match is against Ireland on Saturday at 6:28 am; and the final group match is against South Africa at 10:25 am.
Following the 10th round in Toulouse, the core team that finished with the most Series points, which was ranked 15th, would be relegated. The 12th, 13th, and 14th-placed teams will face off in a four-team relegation playoff.
Speaking to CitizenDigital, former Kenya Sevens Captain Andrew Amonde has affirmed his positivity about a positive result in Hong Kong, highlighting the main things the players should do in the pursuit of regaining Kenyan rugby’s muted glory, “They have to show bravery and fight properly for them to increase their chances of survival. Recently they have shown some good glimpses of determination, they just need to stay focused -be fearless and they will survive,
“This time they need to be ready to cover each others’ mistakes. Only team work and being fearless against the tough opponents in the group stages will pass the message of hope to the rugby lovers in the country and I believe they can.
“There should be that spirit to something extra, to cover any gap during matches.”
