As is the norm, Borussia Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park was full and very vocal. Chelsea, however, put in a dominant display, with Joao Felix as one of the standout performers in the first half. His deliberate shot went over the bar on the first attempt. Kai Havertz set up the second, which, using his weaker left foot, rebounded off the crossbar. Mykhailo Mudryk, a fast winger as well, gave off the impression that he is a strong player but failed to convert.

Joao Felix missed two wonderful chances to give Chelsea the lead on the break before Thiago Silva had a goal disallowed for handball after Reece James’ left-wing free-kick.

Borussia Dortmund were captained to victory by 19-year-old Jude Bellingham. He led his team to a first win against an English side since September 2014 when Dortmund defeated Arsenal (2-0) in the UEFA Champions League, snapping a run of nine games against English clubs without a victory (D1 L8).

Dortmund had then possession but Chelsea had the chances, failing to capitalize on any of them. The game ended in a loss to Chelsea, who are left with an uphill task in the second leg.

Speaking to BT Sports, Jude Bellingham said: “It was a good performance. We were in control and probably dominated – we had some really good openings. I think in the second half we took our foot off the gas and they had a lot more control and got in some dangerous areas.

“I think we showed again how well we can defend to see out games and that is going to be really important going into the second leg.”
