Tems Becomes First Female Nigerian Artist to Win a Grammy

Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi popularly known as Tems won her first grammy at the 65 Grammy awards on Sunday night at the Crypto.com Arena located in LA.

The 27-year-old won in the melodic rap category where she featured in the song Wait for U with Drake. The song Wait for U samples Tems track “Higher” which was from her debut album “For Broken Ears”.

The track Wait for U was released on May 3, 2022, and was the second track in Future’s album “I Never Liked You”.

Tems faced stiff competition from many big names in the music industry like DJ Khaled’s Beautiful, Kendrick Lamar’s Die-Hard Jack Harlow’s First Class, and Latto’s Big Energy (Live).

Tems has also received an Oscar nomination for co-writing Lift Me Up for the Black Panther sequel Wakanda Forever, moreover, she has also been nominated for album of the year for her contribution to Beyonce’s album Renaissance.

Tems, however, is not a stranger to international awards and ceremonies, she has won two BET awards, two soul train Awards, and two NAACP Image Awards in her music career.

Temilade Openiyi started from humble beginnings after she quit her daytime job in the year 2018, taught herself production through YouTube and released her first single track “Mr Rebel”.

Since then, she has never looked back and keeps setting the bar higher with her musical talent.

Tems is leading the new Nigerian artist on the global stage serving as an inspiration to many. Fellow Nigerian Burna Boy also got nominated for a Grammy Award but unfortunately went home with no award that night.
