Traders from Nyamakima and Kamukunji in Nairobi on Tuesday, February 28 protested demanding the closure of the business centre (China Square).
The business operators walked to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s office, demanding the protection of their small-scale businesses.
Due to the staged demonstration, China’s business hub (China Square) has been closed indefinitely until further notice.
The China Square management said that they have stopped business operations, hence clarifying information circulating online is untrue.
Speaking to Nation Media Group, the China Square Owner Lei Cheng said he visited Kenya for the first time in September last year.
He visited different supermarkets and noted most of the cheap commodities that he knew had been imported from China.

Lei Cheng flew back to his country and made a deal with some suppliers in constructing a business store outlet in Kenya. The business store currently is known as China square.
“As a supermarket, we are unable to handle the high volume of traffic, which has become a severe concern for the public safety of all our customers, we are arranging more security guards onsite,” the statement reads.

During its inception on January 29, Cheng said the business started generating profits and in the first two weeks of operation, he made sales worth Ksh 20 million.
On Saturday, February 25, last week, thanks to market pricing and referrals by previous shoppers, the businessman revealed that their sales volumes had more than enlarged. Cheng said they now sell goods worth Ksh 10 million on a bad day.
